Museum of European Garden History
As part of the EUROGA 2002plus exhibition the Museum of European Garden History was founded in the east wing of Benrath Palace on 19th April 2002.
In an exhibition space of approximately 2000 square metres, sculptures, paintings, graphic arts, porcelain, bibliophile books, models and modern media that convey the horticultural themes typical of the maison de plaisance architectural style are on display to the public. The subjects on garden art and architecture range from the villas and the locus amoenus of Greek and Roman history to the Italian Renaissance, from the Baroque representative park to the paradigm shift of the English landscape garden. In seven rooms the museum stages alternating exhibitions showing the themes of garden art history as well as presentations of contemporary concepts.
Every third Sunday in the month at 2.30 pm the museum offers a guided tour.
Lectures, seminars and symposiums on the subject of European garden art are also held at regular intervals in the museum.
