Porcelain from the manufacture Frankenthal - Fragile Treasures
Location: Corps de Logis;

The figure of a ‚gardener with hedge trimmer’ has been acquired for the porcelain collection of palace Benrath. The fine artwork was manufactured in 1777 and belongs to a group of gardeners by Carl Gottlieb Lück. Just as his brother Johann Friedrich Lück he was modeller in Frankenthal since the late 1750s. Both shared their apprenticeship in Meissen and supported Johann Joachim Kaendler in making the equestrian portrait of August II.

The gardener stands on a fine, grassy basement and is firmed up by a trunk at his side. He wears black shoes with golden clasps, white stockings, purple knee breeches and a black tricorne. The work with the hedge trimmer requires both hands, but he is still keeping a nonchalant posture, showing that gardening is no hard task for him.

The figure gives a vivid impression of the high approval for the art of gardening in the 18th century. He may be a real gardener wearing a courtly costume or a courtier just acting as a gardener.
